Description

The Shaft Seal WDR-F11 12x28x7 FPM is designed for sealing rotating shafts in gearboxes, pumps, electric motors and hydraulic drives. It features a metal-reinforced outer case, a single sealing lip made of fluoroelastomer (FPM) and a stainless garter spring that keeps a constant radial force on the shaft throughout the life of the seal. Made of fluoroelastomer (FPM/Viton), the seal is resistant to mineral oils, greases, many synthetic lubricants, fuels and aggressive chemicals. Compared with NBR it offers markedly better heat and ageing resistance, which makes it a common choice for engines, compressors and high-speed gearboxes. Typical applications: - gearboxes and reducers - electric motors and generators - hydraulic and water pumps - compressors and vacuum pumps - agricultural and construction machinery Installation notes: the shaft surface should be ground to a hardness of at least 55 HRC with a roughness of Ra 0.2-0.5 µm and a lead-free finish. Chamfer the shaft end and protect the sealing lip from sharp edges, keyways and threads during assembly. Lightly lubricate the lip and the outer diameter before fitting and press the seal in squarely, using a tool that bears on the outer metal case only. Never run the seal dry. Dimensions: Shaft diameter d = 12 mm Housing bore D = 28 mm Width b = 7 mm Storage: keep in the original packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, ozone sources and solvents. Under these conditions the shelf life of FPM seals exceeds ten years. The seals are supplied individually or in bulk packs. We can also offer other materials (NBR, silicone, PTFE), versions with a dust lip and non-standard sizes on request. Contact us if you need help choosing the right seal for your application, including operating speed, pressure, temperature and medium.

Material

FPM / FKM (fluoroelastomer, Viton®)

  • Operating temperature-20 °C to +200 °C

Good for high temperature, all fuels and oils, ozone and sunlight. Not for brake fluid, acetone-type solvents, ammonia, hot steam or severe cold.

Chemical resistance
Can be usedDo not use
High temperatures, continuously up to +200 °CAcetone, MEK, dioxane, ethyl acetate and similar solvents
Mineral and synthetic oils, incl. engine oil and oils with aggressive additivesBrake fluid (DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1): the ring swells
Benzene, toluene, xylene, trichloroethylene (aromatic and chlorinated solvents)Ammonia, amines and alkaline liquids: the rubber breaks down
All fuels: petrol also with bioethanol (E10, E85), diesel, biodiesel, aviation petrolSteam and hot water above +120 to +130 °C
Fire-resistant hydraulic fluid HFD-R (phosphate esters)Formic acid and strong acetic acid (low-molecular organic acids)
Ozone, UV and sunlight (hardly any ageing)Severe cold below -20 °C with standard FPM: it hardens and leaks
Deep vacuum (very little outgassing)Hot fluorine gas and hydrofluoric acid (HF)

Safety: if the seal is heated above +300 °C (fire, gas torch), FPM releases toxic hydrogen fluoride. Do not touch the burnt residue with bare hands: it forms hydrofluoric acid and causes chemical burns.
